National Carriers Inc is in the midst of a major capital investment effort to its refrigerated transport fleet. The carrier has replaced a majority of its 550-tractor fleet with Kenworth T680 conventionals, and it is on track to purchase 200 new refrigerated trailers this year in addition to more than 200 that were acquired in 2015.
Drivers are in the spotlight at National Carriers. The carrier displays its Drivers of the Month and Driver of the Year on this wall at the Irving TX headquarters terminal.
Drivers manage electronic logs on a tablet computer that is part of the Blue Tree Systems technology.
Utility 53-ft refrigerated trailers are designed to hold -20°F and are spec’d with three to four inches of foamed in place insulation. Included on the new trailers are Thermo King’s leading edge Precedent refrigeration units with SR4 digital controls.
Data from the refrigeration unit is collected by Blue Tree technology and can be reviewed by shippers.
National Carriers prefers SmartTruck UT6 aerodynamics over side panels on refrigerated trailers.
Drivers have embraced automated transmissions in the new tractors.
National Carriers’ newest tractors are spec’d with Thermo King TriPac auxiliary power units.
Swing rear doors on the refrigerated trailers are equipped with security systems from Transport Security Inc.
Trailers are specified with Hendrickson’s Tiremaax tire inflation system. The fleet has begun buying Continental tires.
